Everything you need to know about European sleeper trains: private sleeper compartments, couchettes, breakfast, and how to book passholder reservations on oebb.at.
ÖBB Nightjet is Europe's premier night train network operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Connecting major cultural capitals across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, Nightjet allows you to travel overnight in comfort and wake up directly in city centers.
Nightjet offers three distinct accommodation tiers: Standard Seated Carriages (budget option with 6-seat compartments), Couchettes (4-berth or 6-berth shared compartments with fresh linen, blanket, pillow, and breakfast included), and Sleeper Cabins (1, 2, or 3-bed private rooms with real mattresses, washbasin, private shower/toilet in Deluxe rooms, welcome drink, and a hot à la carte breakfast).
When booking passholder reservations on oebb.at, do NOT click 'Seat reservation only'. Instead, search for your journey as a standard ticket and add 'Interrail / Eurail - Globalpass' under the passenger discounts section. This unlocks the exact passholder supplement rates for couchettes and sleepers.
Under Eurail/Interrail rules, taking a direct overnight train that departs before midnight only uses 1 travel day—the date of departure. You do not need to spend a second travel day for arriving the next morning.
Yes. You can book private Sleeper Cabins (Single, Double, or Triple) or book an entire 4-berth/6-berth Couchette compartment privately for your family or travel group.
Breakfast is included in all Couchette and Sleeper Cabin bookings. Sleeper Cabin guests receive a full à la carte breakfast with coffee/tea, bread, cheese, ham, and jam chosen from a menu card the night before.
Nightjet tickets and passholder reservations generally open 180 days (6 months) in advance. Sleeper cabins sell out quickly, so early booking is strongly recommended.
Deluxe Sleeper Cabins feature a private en-suite bathroom with shower, washbasin, and toilet inside the room. Standard Sleeper Cabins feature a washbasin in the room with shared shower and toilet at the end of the carriage.
