Interrail is designed for European citizens and official residents, while Eurail is for travelers residing outside Europe (e.g. USA, Canada, Australia, Asia). Both passes offer access to the same 33 participating countries and over 40,000 railway stations across Europe.
Passes come in continuous formats (e.g. 15 consecutive days) or flexi formats (e.g. 7 days within 1 month). A 'travel day' runs from midnight to midnight (00:00 to 23:59 CET). During a travel day, you can board unlimited trains operated by participating railway companies.
While your pass covers rail travel, certain high-speed trains (e.g. Eurostar, French TGV, Italian Frecciarossa, Spanish AVE) and overnight sleeper trains require a mandatory seat reservation fee (typically €3 to €35). Regional and commuter trains in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, UK, and Belgium require NO seat reservations—simply step onboard!
Download the official Rail Planner App, enter your pass number, add your trip, and toggle 'My Pass' when boarding. Ticket inspectors scan the QR code generated in the app alongside your passport or national ID card.
A pass is usually cheaper if you travel long distances across multiple countries or desire maximum flexibility. However, for short regional routes or single country trips booked months in advance, point-to-point tickets may be cheaper.
For Eurostar, TGV, Frecciarossa, AVE, and Nightjet, yes—seat reservations should be booked weeks in advance. For DB ICE in Germany, ÖBB Railjet in Austria, and SBB in Switzerland, reservations are optional.
An Interrail Global Pass includes up to 2 travel days in your country of residence (1 Outbound journey and 1 Inbound journey) to connect to international borders or airports.
Because rail passes offer flexible travel, if you miss a connecting train due to a delay, you can simply board the next available non-reserved train on the same route.
